IELTS examiners do not score your accent. The Pronunciation criterion measures one thing above all: how much effort a listener needs to understand you. Chunking is the entry point, and it is trainable in days, not months. Take any sentence from one of your recorded answers and mark where the natural meaning-groups fall: "When I was at university // I shared a flat // with three other students // which taught me a lot // about compromise." What is the most efficient way to train pronunciation?

Skip generic exercises; run a loop that targets your own speech.

  1. Diagnose. Record a full Part 2 answer. Note every word where a listener would hesitate, and classify the cause: sound, word stress, rhythm, or flat intonation. Three sessions of this will expose your pattern.
  2. Shadow. Take a 30-second clip of one clear speaker, listen in short phrases, and repeat with matched stress, chunking and melody — not just the sounds. Ten minutes daily moves rhythm and intonation faster than any other exercise.
  3. Drill minimal pairs only for your confusions. If ship/sheep is not your problem, drilling it is wasted time. Work your actual pairs — for many Central Asian speakers that includes bad/bed, walk/work and the final -s/-z distinction that carries plural and third-person grammar.
